Press release announces a press conference on August 5 at the Friends Center by the Martin Luther King Anti-Apartheid Coalition, which includes religious, community and labor groups. Members will give the Coalition's response to the bill on South Africa which has emerged from a joint U.S. House-Senate conference committee, information about a March and Rally on August 24 in Philadelphia, and an update from two members who just returned from Southern Africa. Since the South African government declared a state of a state of emergency, over 1,200 activists have been arrested without trial, and 28 people have been killed by security forces. The march on August 24 will begin at Progress Plaza and will proceed to PNB and Mellon Banks and then to Rhom and Hass Co., all of which have operations in South Africa. A "Liberation Rally," with speakers and entertainment, will take place at the Liberty Bell. Participants at the press conference will include Jerry Herman, Coalition Co-Chairperson, American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), Southern Africa Program; Kenneth Heard, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) DC 46, Local 2817; Godfrey Sithole, Member of the African National Congress (ANC) of South Africa; Catherine Blunt, Coalition Co-Chairperson and member of Coalition for a Free South Africa and Namibia (CAFSAN); and Shaka Kusaidi, Racial Concerns of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of Friends.
