A benefit performance of WOZA ALBERT will be held at the Theater Center of Philadelphia on August 15. On June 20, 200 students and others demonstrated at the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN) trustee meeting demanding divestment. Bernie Dinkin of Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union (ACTWU) spoke there, representing the Coalition. The trustees (now include Constance Clayton, Superintendent of the Philadelphia School District) refused even to discuss the issue. The coalition announced that Germantown Savings Bank, Provident National Bank, and Central Penn Bank are no longer selling the South African gold coins. Members of the legislative committee are planning the card campaign to lobby for national, state and local legislation aimed at breaking the economic links between the U.S. and South Africa. Members of this committee, with the Coalition for a Free South Africa and Namibia (CAFSAN), met with State Rep. David Richardson, whose bills mandate divestment of state funds from corporations and banks linked with South Africa. They also have contacted U.S. Reps, Bill Gray (Phila.) Steve Solarz (N.Y.) and Sen. Edward Kennedy (MA) about the Anti-Apartheid Act of 1985. Coalition co-chairperson Jerry Herman and Communications Committee coordinator Shaka Kusaidi will return soon from visits to Southern Africa. The Education Committee has organized several forums, the most recent one at White Rock Baptist Church in West Philadelphia. The report discusses a Day of National Action October 11, Jewelers Row, banks making loans to South Africa, boycott action, the Sullivan Principles, and the Democratic Party.
