Action Alert for a march and rally on August 24, starting at Progress Plaza, to protest U.S. corporate and governmental support of apartheid. The march will pass Philadelphia National Bank (PNB), Mellon bank, and Rohm and Haas Co., which all profit from apartheid. The rally will be on the quadrangle across from the Liberty Bell. Planning meetings will be held on August 15 at the office of Women's International League for Peace and Freedom (WILPF) and on August 21 at the office of American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). The demonstration will denounce the inadequacy of the House-Senate compromise sanctions legislation that was passed in place of the Anti-Apartheid Act of 1985. It also will support local divestment legislation sponsored by Councilmembers Ortiz, Clark, and Cohen and state-level legislation introduced by Rep. Dave Richardson. The mailing describes conditions under the state of emergency in South Africa that require these actions. The mailing includes postcards to send to Senators Arlen Specter and John Heinz about a need for stronger sanctions and opposition to the Sullivan Principles. Another card is to send to your State Representative to support Rep. Richardson's anti-apartheid bill. The mailing advertises two benefits: a performance of the play WOZA ALBERT at the Theatre Center of Philadelphia on August 15 and a concert at the Community Education Center on September 13.
