Description

Church, labor, student, and other organizations in at least 50 countries observed a Day of Protest against South Africa's apartheid policy on Human Rights Day, December 10, 1957. The report includes a sampling of communications from around the world. In an almost unprecedented action, Minister of External Affairs Eric Louw gave a radio address on December 12 attempting to reply to the Declaration of Conscience. The Right Reverend Ambrose Reeves, Anglican Bishop of Johannesburg, gave an effective answer to Mr. Louw's speech. On December 17, the South African government announced that it was dropping the case against 61 of the 156 who were arrested a year ago on the charge of treason....
