Copy of a letter to President Ronald Reagan from William Johnston expressing concern about the treatment of people held incommunicado in detention by the South African Police. Thozamile Gqweta, president of the South African Allied Workers Union, was arrested by security police on December 8, 1981. The letter quotes Helen Suzman reading in the South African Parliament from a letter smuggled out of prison describing what happened to Neil Aggett, a medical doctor and trade union official, before he was found hanged in his cell.
