Abram Fischer, distinguished Afrikaner, former chairman of the South African Bar Council, and leading legal defender of opponents of apartheid, was sentenced to life imprisonment in May following his conviction on 15 charges, nine of them under the Suppression of Communism Act and the Sabotage Act.
