The article opens with a quotation from Witness Mangwende, Zimbabwe's Foreign Minister, and goes on to discuss South Africa's concern to maintain apartheid and keep control of Namibia (defeating the ANC and the South West Africa Peoples' Organization - SWAPO) and to commit aggression against states in the southern Africa region. The article discusses the Southern African Development Coordinating Conference (SADCC) and South Africa's extensive support for the Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) and the Mozambique National Resistance Movement (MNR). Davis recalls the history of South Africa's invasion of Angola, with a 6,000 man force in August 1975, in an effort to prevent the MPLA national liberation movement from coming to power. That invasion had the backing of then Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and the CIA, but it was eventually checked with the aid of Cuban troops.
