The pamphlet consisting of extracts from an article in the October 27, 1975 issue of Christianity and Crisis. Houser discusses the period of Portuguese colonialism and the armed struggle that began in Angola in 1961 and followed two years later in Guinea-Bissau and a year-and-a-half later in Mozambique. The pressures of the colonial wars led to the coup in Portugal in 1974. The transition to independence in Guinea-Bissau and Mozambique proceeded smoothly. Portugal recognized the independent republic of Guinea-Bissau in September 1974 and the People's Republic of Mozambique in June 1975.
