The pamphlet contains the testimony of Sister Janice McLaughlin, M.M. of the Maryknoll Sisters before the House Subcommittee on Africa on October 7, 1992. An introduction to the testimony discusses the prospects for a United Nations-brokered cease-fire in Mozambique in 1993, after South Africa's destabilization of Mozambique has caused hundreds of thousands of deaths. The introduction says that, with FRELIMO the overwhelming favorite to win any election, the RENAMO rebels and their former backers in South Africa may still try and undermine the accord. McLaughlin's testimony gives a detailed account of the toll that the war has taken and the pressing social problems that will have to be addressed. McLaughlin says she lived and worked in Mozambique in 1979 and 1980 assisting refugees from Zimbabwe. McLaughlin discusses the Mozambique Resistance Movement, more commonly known as MNR or RENAMO.
