The mailing discusses the upcoming April election in South Africa. Kumalo and Knight say this historic moment presents new challenges for the international anti-apartheid coalition, including U.S. cities, states, universities, unions, religious and community groups that successfully used their economic power to enact sanctions and divestment. Economic justice will not come easily to South Africa. Many states and cities have already responded to ANC (African National Congress) President Nelson Mandela's call for the lifting of sanctions, and some U.S. investors have begun to implement policies to encourage U.S. companies to adopt socially responsible business practices aimed at overcoming the legacy of apartheid. Kumalo and Knight say U.S. religious investors have introduced shareholder resolutions at more than 20 U.S. companies urging them to implement the Code of Conduct for Businesses Operating in South Africa adopted by the South African Council of Churches (SACC) last July. The mailing discusses two targeted investment opportunities - a housing bond to help finance affordable housing and a socially responsible mutual fund. The mailing includes: Cities that have already lifted their sanctions as of January 17, 1994 and Code of Conduct for Businesses Operating in South Africa adopted by the National Conference of the South African Council of Churches in July 1993.
