Mailing to anti-apartheid activists. The mailing says the African National Congress (ANC) has announced plans to call for the lifting of sanctions; some press reports indicate that Nelson Mandela could call for the lifting of sanctions when he addresses the United Nations this Friday, September 24th. The mailing says the most effective continuing sanctions on South Africa are the state and local actions. The mailing asks people to act swiftly to lift local sanctions once Mandela had made that call. The mailing says the end of sanctions must not signal the end of the movement of support for the people of South Africa. The mailing asks people, one Mandela has made his call to lift sanctions, to seek prompt action to lift remaining local sanctions and consider Mandela's appeal to link that action to calls for socially responsible investment; and support efforts to ensure that the forthcoming elections are free and fair. The mailing includes a copy of a letter to Jennifer Davis from African National Congress President Nelson R. Mandela which says as soon as the Transitional Executive Council (TEC) is established, backed up by the appropriate legislation, we will be calling on those engaged in the anti-apartheid struggle to act swiftly to ensure that the remaining sanctions are removed; a copy of the letter was sent to Lindiwe Mabuza.
