On the third anniversary of Nelson Mandela's release from prison, President Clinton is being urged to publicly condemn apartheid's violence and call for immediate democratic elections in South Africa. During STOP Apartheid Violence Week, February 7-14, petitions are being signed and protests are being organized in ten cities - New York, Detroit, Los Angeles, Seattle, Albany, Atlanta, Kansas City (Mo), San Francisco, Cleveland, and Detroit. Political violence in South Africa claimed more than 3,500 lives in 1992 and threatens negotiations to end apartheid. The press release discusses teach-ins and British Petroleum.
