A peaceful demonstration by 100 students against apartheid in education on 2 June was attacked by 50 policemen wielding truncheons. The demonstration was on the steps of St. George's Anglican Cathedral in Cape Town, 100 yards from the Parliament buildings where the country's legislators were sitting. • Worldwide media coverage was given to white university student demonstrations during the summer, but not to growing actions by black university students at the 'tribal universities.' • Thirteen members of the African People's Democratic Union of Southern Africa and the Unity Movement of South Africa were convicted early in April and given prison terms of five to eight years.
