Mailing to Religious Action Network (RAN) reporting that Human Rights Sunday observances were a great success. At least 30 churches in ten states participated. Since December, all but one of the political prisoners from the Bophuthatswana "bantustan" have been released¸ but, of course, hundreds of South Africans remain imprisoned for opposing apartheid. The mailing includes FIVE FACTS ABOUT APARTHEID VIOLENCE and CHURCHES WHICH PARTICIPATED IN HUMAN RIGHTS SUNDAY, DEC.8, 1991. It also includes "APPEAL FOR ACTION AGAINST APARTHEID" issued jointly by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Chief Albert J. Lutuli on Human Rights Day, December 10, 1962 and CALL FOR AN INTERNATIONAL BOYCOTT OF APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICA, a statement by the late Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at a meeting at Hunter College, New York City, on Human Rights Day, December 10, 1965. The mailing discusses sanctions, Inkatha, murder, the South African democratic movement, U.S. tax dollars, Dr. Verwoerd, opposition to white supremacy, Great Britain, France, the USSR, the King holiday, Germany, Japan, and the American Negro. [Note: Lutuli is an alternative spelling of Luthuli.]
