The press release announces that the American Committee of Africa has placed in four South African newspapers and one Namibian newspaper an advertisement signed by more than 100 U.S. individuals and organizations that condemns the South African government's ban on 18 opposition organizations and commemorates National Detainees Day on March 12. Among the signers, who are participating in the "Unlock Apartheid's Jails" campaign, are the United States Conference of Mayors, the United Auto Workers, the Oil Chemical and Atomic Workers International Union, Congresswoman Patricia Schroeder of Denver, Colorado; Senator Barbara A. Mikulski of Maryland; Congressman John Conyers, Jr., of Detroit, Michigan; and Harvey Adams, president of the Pittsburgh branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). Religious organizations signing the advertisement include the Africa Office of the National Council of Churches, the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, and the Reformed Church in America. Other signers included Bishop Herbert W. Chilstrom of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and Bishop H. Coleman McGehee, Jr., President of the Michigan Coalition for Human Rights.
