Reprint of a newspaper Op-Ed decrying the South African government's effectively banning 17 organizations, including the two-million-member United Democratic Front. Repression to this extent has occurred only twice before, first in 1960 when the government banned the African National Congress and the Pan Africanist Congress, and again in 1977 when 19 anti-apartheid organizations were banned following the police murder of Steven Biko. Unfortunately, there is little likelihood that President Reagan will take the lead in calling for sanctions. The article mentions Archbishop Desmond M. Tutu, the Detainees Parents' Support Committee, and the Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986.
