The Action Alerts says last year Congress in 1986 passed partial sanctions against South Africa in a major setback for the Reagan Administration; however, these measures only barred new investment in South Africa and is riddled with loopholes, notably regarding the import of strategic minerals; moreover, the Administration has unjustifiably carved out new exceptions in the implementation process. The Action Alert says Congressman Ronald Dellums (D-CA) and Senator Alan Cranston (D-CA) have introduced a comprehensive sanctions bill modeled closely on the bill passed by the House of Representatives last year. The Action Alert says this legislation, House Bill 1153 and Senate Bill S556, would mandate: 1) Complete U.S. corporate withdrawal from South Africa and Namibia within six months, 2) Total ban on trade with South Africa 3) Ban on intelligence sharing with the South African Government. The Action Alert says this new provision would bar the present sharing of information between the CIA and South African intelligence regarding the African National Congress. The mailing calls for prompt hearings on the bills and urges people to call on their Congressional representatives to co-sponsor and vote for the legislation.
