The press release announced that Jennifer Davis, Executive Director of the American Committee on Africa, urged Bechtel, Crawford and Russell, and Brown and Root to withdraw from the Mossell Bay fuel-from-natural gas project in South Africa. These three companies are in the final running to serve as project managers of the $2 billion undertaking. The press release points out that the Mossell Bay project is part of the South African government's attempt to seek immunity from international sanctions, as advocated by Bishop Desmond Tutu, Winnie Mandela, and the United Democratic Front. A letter from Davis to Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr., Chairman of Bechtel Group Inc., accompanies the press release.
