In a cover letter Dumisani Kumalo and Jennifer Davis say last year was a record year for the divestment movement and, so far, 1986 is looking even better. Actions are planned in at least two dozen states and even more cities. The effect of actions is being felt in both the United States and South Africa. The newsletter says since 1976 divestment and/or selective purchase legislation has been enacted in 17 states, 60 cities, 9 counties and one U.S. Territory (Virgin Islands). The newsletter includes a summary chart of the binding measures that have been passed including a description of the nature of action, date enacted and amount affected. The newsletter reports the states that have adopted measures are: California, Connecticut, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Dakota, Rhode Island, Wisconsin; and Virgin Island. Included with the newsletter is newspaper clips; a publication Model Selective Purchasing Bill; a leaflet American Workers Have United to Boycott Shell distributed by the United Mine Workers of America and the Free South Africa Movement; and postcards to IBM, Control Data and Burroughs Corporation calling on the companies to withdraw from South Africa produced by the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility.
