This mailing about covert U.S. aid to UNITA says the U.S. in on the brink of direct military intervention in southern Africa. Since the collapse of Portuguese colonialism and the establishment of an independent government in Angola in 1975, South Africa has been using UNITA, the anti-government rebel group led by Jonas Savimbi, in its war to undermine the independence of Angola. The mailing says the Angolan government is a threat to South African's illegal occupation of Namibia, and it discusses the South African invasions of Angola and Cuban troops. The mailing say UNITA has been armed, trained and supplied by the South African Defence Force. President Reagan was forced by Congressional pressure to impose very limited sanctions on South Africa, but the Administration quickly was back on its old policy track of supporting South Africa in its war against Angola. The Reagan Administration has expressed its support for millions in covert military aid to UNITA. The mailing asks people to call the White House to oppose aid to UNITA, urge their Congressional Representative to publicly oppose such aid and to back Congressman Weiss' bill HR 3690 barring covert aid to UNITA, and urge constituents to contact members of the Congressional Intelligence committees. The mailing includes a leaflet Friday March 21, 1986: PROTEST DAY AGAINST U.S. POLICY IN SOUTHERN AFRICA with a focus on U.S. funding for UNITA.
