Mailing asks people to write to Elliot Abrams, Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights, to grant political asylum to Dennis Brutus, the noted black South African poet and apartheid opponent who is facing deportation. Professor Brutus was recently declared deportable by a Chicago Immigration Court as the result of a complex series of events beyond his control. Unless he is granted political asylum he will be deported either to South Africa, where he grew up, or Zimbabwe, his current country of nationality.
