Announcement of a press conference at the American Committee on Africa by Tsietsi Mashinini, president of the Student Representative Council in Soweto, which led the protests in June 1976 against the use of Afrikaans in the black high schools. These demonstrations sparked the mass rebellion that spread across South Africa. Mashinini was also president of the Johannesburg region of the Southern Africa Student Movement.
