Statement prepared for the International Seminar on the Eradication of Apartheid and in Support of the Struggle for Liberation in South Africa organized by the United Nations Special Committee on Apartheid in Havana, Cuba. The statement says the American Committee on Africa has campaigned, frequently working in coalition with other organizations, to stop loans by American banks to South Africa, keep South Africa out of the Olympic Games, stop American artists and entertainers from going to South Africa or allowing their works to be used there through the "We Say No To Apartheid" effort, end the U.S. sugar quota given to South Africa, tighten the arms embargo, stop advertising (through legal action) in the New York Times for jobs in South Africa because they violate New York's anti-discrimination laws, stop South African Airways from flying into New York, and support the liberation movements through the Africa Defense and Aid Fund. The statement discusses the end of Portuguese colonialism, particularly in Angola, and U.S. government opposition to the MPLA and support for FNLA and UNITA. The statement points out that Cuban troops were introduced into Angola after South Africa's invasion from the south began. The statement discusses the importance of the U.S. Congress' revealing secret CIA activity in Angola and its vote to cut off CIA activities there that the Administration had pla4nned to escalate. The statement discusses Zimbabwe and Namibia. • Stop American investments in South Africa. • Absolutely oppose the implementation of the Bantustan policy of the South African government. • The arms embargo must be completely enforced. • The sports and cultural boycott of South Africa must be rigorously enforced. • South Africa propaganda efforts must be combated.
