In an action alert mailing, Paul Irish writes that widespread "security raids" are being carried out throughout South Africa and Namibia. Most detainees are being held under the Terrorism Act, which allows for indefinite detention in solitary confinement without access to lawyers or even family. Irish says most of the men and women known to be in detention in South Africa are part of the "black consciousness" movement which has spearheaded recent opposition to apartheid. Irish discusses the South Africa Students Organization (SASO), South African Student Movement, Black Allied Workers' Union, Christian Institute, and the National Union of South Africa Students (NUSAS). Most detainees in Namibia are part of the South West African Peoples' Organization (SWAPO). Irish asks people to protest these actions by contacting their government representatives and to send solidarity letters to the Christian Institute and to SWAPO in Zambia. Irish also mentions the case of two Zimbabweans arrested in Delaware, Tapson Mawere and Synos Mangazva. The mailing includes a publications list of The Africa Fund and two enclosures by Episcopal Churchmen for South Africa: DETAINEES under TERRORISM ACT- SOUTH AFRICA, September 20, 1975, and NAMIBIANS IN DETENTION September 20, 1975.
