Joint press statement by George M. Houser, Executive Director of the American Committee on Africa, and Dr. John Marcum, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Africa Program at Lincoln University, released at the Overseas Press Club in New York. The press release discussed Houser's and Marcum's recent visit to the Congo and rebel-held territory of northern Angola. Their purposes were to learn about the more than 150,000 Angolan refugees in the Congo who have fled from the war in Angola and also the plight of the refugees within Angola itself; to assess the critical medical situation confronting Angola and to deliver some medicines; to gather facts about educational problems confronting the Angolan people and explore possible educational training that would be practical; and to learn about the war and evaluate Portuguese claims that the rebellion was under control. • Medical project • Military • Living conditions • Racial attitudes • How can the conflict end? • Recommendations for action in the United States
