The report discusses projects including organizing against American corporate support for minority rule, lobbying Congress and acting through the courts to change government policies sanctioning apartheid, and servicing a growing network of individuals and organizations. Also, The Africa Fund provided legal defense and humanitarian assistance to individual Africans in the freedom struggle; helped schools, clinics, and self-help agricultural projects sponsored by the African freedom movements; and prepared solidly researched materials on southern Africa. ACOA prepared and circulated a background memorandum and met with management consultants to Seagram Distillers Co. which was planning to invest in a South African bantustan. South Africa is now receiving an estimated two billion dollars from U.S. banks. South Africa initiated an advertising campaign to sell gold Krugerrands to Americans to help earn critical foreign exchange. ACOA sponsored a press conference in New York and other interviews and meetings for Tsietsi Mashinini, the Soweto high school student leader. ACOA continued to work to prevent South Africa and Rhodesia from being represented in international sports with segregated teams. ACOA continued legal cases to stop U.S. support of apartheid, joining a suit to stop weapons-grade uranium shipments to South Africa, reopening its case against South African Airways flights in the U.S., and appealing its case against the New York Times for carrying discriminatory advertisements from South Africa. ACOA initiated a coalition of church, student, peace, and trade union organizations to oppose U.S. intervention in Angola. The Africa Fund worked to support reconstruction efforts in Mozambique.
