In 1973, the 20th anniversary of the American Committee on Africa (ACOA), ACOA cooperated in forming an ad hoc Committee to Support the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. Also, the U.S. Senate voted 54 to 37 to repeal the Byrd Amendment of 1971, which permitted the U.S. to violate U.N. sanctions against Rhodesia. ACOA cooperated closely with the Organization of African Unity to persuade American track and field athletes to refuse to participate in the South African multi-national "Open" Games. For more than a decade, ACOA has documented and publicized the role of U.S. corporations in strengthening and supporting apartheid and colonial rule in southern Africa. ACOA staff and board members attended the stockholder meeting of Exxon to protest the company's plans for oil exploration in Angola and of American Metal Climax to oppose their mining in Namibia. The Boycott of Gulf Oil has expanded nationally. In June, 1973, a sequel to the 1966-1969 Bank Campaign emerged when ACOA and several other groups obtained documents from the European American Banking Corporation revealing that 11 U.S. banks have been involved in loans totaling some $210 million to the South African government since 1970. • End Year Review • Republic of Guinea-Bissau • Restoring Sanctions • Protests Against Apartheid • Corporate Disengagement Issues • Church Shareholders Campaign • Gulf Oil Boycott • Secret Loans to South Africa • Legal Challenges • New York Times Case • Zimbabwe Imports • South African Airways in U.S. • Providing Services • In Washington • Research and Information • Liberation Movement Visitors • Africa Defense and Aid Fund • The Africa Fund • Financial Results • Executive Board • National Committee • Staff
