Paper by Edward Marcus, Professor of Economics, Brooklyn College, for the National Conference on the South Africa Crisis and American Action held in Washington, D.C. discusses the strength of the South African economy, which is related partly to its production of 70% of the Free World's gold. The migrant labor system and wage discrimination are discussed. Marcus also reports on U.S. trade with and investment in South Africa. In 1958-62, the rate of return of U.S. investments in South Africa was two-thirds higher than the average for all U.S. foreign investments.
