Rivers discusses the ways South Africa has defied the United Nations sanctions against Rhodesia, particularly by providing essential oil supplies. Rivers argues that most or all of the oil that Rhodesia has obtained since the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) has been supplied in defiance of UN sanctions, via intermediaries, from the South African subsidiaries of Mobil, Caltex, Total, Shell and British Petroleum (BP).
