The assassination of Amilcar Cabral, Secretary General of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC), removes a valuable African leader, with particular clarity about the essential theory of political organization. Guinea-Bissau is virtually independent, after ten years of armed struggle. Portugal, a poor country, could not carry out this fight against the liberation forces of Guinea-Bissau, Angola or Mozambique without the strong support from its NATO allies, particularly the United States.
