Death in detention of Tshifhiwa Isaac Muofhe, a 28-year-old Lutheran Church lay preacher and insurance salesman on 11 November 1981. He was detained by police in the Venda Bantustan in the northern region of South Africa's Transvaal province and found dead two days later. He had been beaten mercilessly. On 5 February 1982, the South African Police announced that the body of Dr. Neil Aggett had been found hanging in his cell at John Vorster Square headquarters. The 27-year-old medical doctor and trade union official had been in detention since his arrest on 27 November in one of last year's widespread security police sweeps.
