This article by the Editorial Board of Christianity and Crisis discusses the practical campaign organized by the Committee on Conscience Against Apartheid, chaired by A. Phillip Randolph and initiated by the American Committee on Africa and the University Christian Movement, to urge withdrawal of accounts from those American banks most involved in loans to South Africa. The article announces that the Board of Directors of the magazine has decided to move its account. The article notes that U.S. financial involvement in South Africa increased in recent years and that U.S. banks rescued the racist government after the Sharpeville massacre. The article says that banking, more than industry, has shored up the Government through a revolving loan involving ten U.S. banks: First National City Bank of New York, Chase Manhattan Bank, Manufacturers Hanover Trust Co., Morgan Guaranty Trust Co., Irving Trust Co., Bankers Trust Co., National Trust and Savings Association, Continental Illinois National Bank and Trust, and First National Bank of Chicago.
