This mailing says that the South African frigate, the President Kruger, has been invites to participate in the international navel review that will be part of the Bicentennial celebration in New York harbor on July 3. Also, the Esmeralda, a Chilean clipper used as a torture chamber just after the military coup, will participate in "Operation Sail" on July 4. The Esmeralda will have an honorary South African captain and other personnel from the South African armed forces on board. The mailing notes that the SAS Kruger will be the first South African navy vessel to visit the U.S. The invitation, announced in a communique to government offices by Secretary of State Kissinger, came six months after the original list on 90-odd participating countries was announced. The mailing urges that letters of protest be sent to Kissinger. The mailing also publicizes a rally in solidarity with African liberation sponsored by the Committee for Southern Africa Freedom Day on June 25 at Williams AME Church featuring the Ambassadors of Mozambique and Angola, liberation movement representatives from South Africa and Namibia, and Tony Monteiro of the [National] Anti-Imperialist Movement in Solidarity with African Liberation.
