The mailing discusses the conflicts that occurred at the international convention of the African Studies Association in Montreal. At the meeting, the Africa Research Group (ARG) was primarily concerned with promoting a critique of the role that African Studies has played in U.S. penetration of Africa. The mailing notes that ARG now hopes to play a more positive role by assisting concerned people in finding new teaching materials and new research problems to explore. ARG will continue to operate outside of academic institutions and professional organizations but plans to continue to make ARG thinking and publications widely available.
