This document is articles in the NAAIC Newsletter written by the Madison Area Committee on Southern Africa and Southern Africa Committee (SAC), about their recent activities. MACSA has been working to increase awareness in their community about Southern Africa and to raise material support for liberation movements. Recent monthly meetings focused on internal education about the struggles in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Angola and Namibia. Materials prepared by the Liberation Support Movement (LSM) were used to discuss Angola. They organized two community events: Robert van Lierop gave a slide-illustrated talk on his trip into free Mozambique with FRELIMO, and South African poet Dennis Brutus spoke on "The Poetry of Suffering." MACSA raised over $1000 for MPLA and FRELIMO in medicines sent through LSM. Another fundraising campaign to aid striking workers of Namibia was launched. Letters of appeal were sent to unions and churches, describing U.S. exploitation of cheap labor in Namibia and the courageous stand of some church leaders against South African oppression in Namibia. The article by SAC reports on an all-day evaluation session. Members will keep their main focus on publishing "Southern Africa Magazine," helping to research and write a book on U.S. economic involvement in southern Africa (being prepared by Tami Hultman and Reed Kramer), and improving and marketing the slide tape show shown at the Eastern NAAIC meeting in Boston. The committee will drop its literature services. SAC members have been involved with actions at various corporations' annual stockholders' meetings, sometimes with churches as sponsors. "Disclosure resolutions" were debated and voted down at annual meetings of Goodyear, Gulf Oil, General Motors, AMAX and Newmont Mining; large demonstrations and leafleting were held protesting importation of chrome from Rhodesia at Union Carbide and Foote Mineral Co.; the Gulf Boycott Coalition leafleted and held a "Liberation Celebration" at Gulf's meeting; and the Namibia Support Group leafleted the AMAX meeting.
