This mailing seeks support for and participation in a national campaign to withdraw funds from banks which loan money to the South African government, to its state-owned agencies and corporations, and to U.S. corporations for their activities there. The leaflet says that in Seattle the focus is on Seattle First National Bank and secondarily on Rainier and Peoples' Bank, all of which make loans to South Africa. These loans provide critical underpinning to the apartheid system of South Africa. The yearly amount of U.S. loans to South Africa is approximately equal to South Africa's yearly defense and oil import costs. The leaflet says the objective is to pressure U.S. banks to adopt a policy of no new loans to South Africa. People are asked to fill out and return an attached Statement of Agreement. This document includes a Statement of Endorsement. Also included is a postcard, the left half is information for the Seattle Committee To Oppose Bank Loans to South Africa and the right half is addressed to Mr. Jenkins, Chairman of the Board of Seattle First Nation Bank expressing dissatisfaction with Seafirst's practice of making loans to South Africa.
