Recommendations made after the International Seminar on The Role of Transnational Corporations in Namibia in Washington, DC, November 29 - December 2, 1982. This report identifies the 14 participants from the U.S., Canada and Europe in the Grass Roots Group Gathering at the Namibia Seminar organized by the American Committee on Africa (ACOA). The report says being a part of a grassrootsy type of organization trying to get started out in the hinterlands, there are a number of problems we have face and possibly others have faced. 1. Unless one is knowledgeable, you do not know where to get started organizing an anti-apartheid group. 2. If one manages to get started, how does one hook into other local, state, and national groups. 3. How does one communicate pertinent information to other grassroots organizations and - -- national and even international organizations activities pertinent to their area and for which they need some support and vice versa. EXAMPLES: a. The recent IMF difficulty. The pending loan was known by some national groups but was communicated to small groups a bit too late for them to effectively do something. b. South African Airways utilizing services of an American airline to fly out of Houston. How does a local group let the rest of the country know this so that they can organize some effective strategy against that airline in their own area and nation wide. 4. What resources are there nationally and internationally and how do grass roots organizations tap into these resources? The report says is it possible for the U.N. Council on Namibia and/or the United Nations Centre on Apartheid or the pooling together of monetary resources of several national (and possibly international) organizations to hire on (two, maybe three) person(s) whose main tasks will be centered around grassroots organizations nationwide? NSC (Namibia Support Committee), Kathy Flewellen, SASP (Southern Africa Support Project), Solveig Kjeseth, Namibia Concerns, Betsy Alkenbrack, TCLSAC (Toronto Committee for the Liberation of Southern Africa), divestment, bans, trade, uranium, education, material aid, mobilization, IMF (International Monetary Fund), South African Airways (SAA), Wartburg Seminary, Jennifer Davis, Bill Johnston, Sean McBride, Maria Almeida, grassroots organizations, and monetary resources.
