The next issue of Africa Report by the African-American Institute will contain an article on the South African lobby in the United States and study of various segments of the South African economy (banks, mines, automobile industry etc.) based on research by the American Committee on Africa (ACOA). The Council of the African-American Institute sponsored a panel on Rhodesia on February 8. Two members of the Union Seminary Social Action Committee are organizing a drive to get Union student, faculty, administration and Seminary to transfer funds from First National City Bank (or any other banks with major interests in South Africa) to Freedom National Bank. At Brown University, on February 12, there will be a day-long conference entitled "South Africa Today" with speakers from the State Department, academia, and public life. The Consultative Council on South Africa met on February 8 at the Church Center for the U.N. to discuss the March 19-21 conference in Washington, D.C. The Southern Africa Committee is 1 ½ years old, funded by National Student Christian Federation (NSCF), sends minutes to about 50 members, and sends the News Summary on Rhodesia to about 300 people. It is planning for the March Emphasis on Southern Africa with the National Student Association and others. Dave Wiley suggested that the Rhodesia News Summary might be expanded to include all of Southern Africa and could be sent to more people. A number of Rhodesian students throughout the country would be interested in receiving the news summary. Richard Courage, a regional coordinator of the National Federation of Catholic College Students, wondered whether our strategy would overlap with the Consulting Council on S.A.; he also asked about participation of Africans in our activity. Bill Johnson of Episcopal Churchmen for South Africa (ECSA) stressed the importance of personal contact with Americans on the Southern Africa situation. A workcamp in Swaziland is planned for this summer under the auspices of the Diocese of Zululand and Swaziland. The minutes mention Congressional leaders, U.S. foreign policy, local groups, Congressional hearings on South Africa, Nathan Opoku, SDS (Students for a Democratic Society), denominational groups, Queens College, Gerhard, the Committee on Volunteers for Mission, and the Episcopal Church.
