Locally, you can organize a candlelight vigil for the victims of apartheid, hold a demonstration against U.S. involvement in South Africa and for divestment, educate others about the situation in South Africa and HR 1580/ S 556, ring church bells to commemorate the Soweto killings, get friends and family together and write letters to your elected officials and local newspapers concerning HR 1580/ S 2378, and try to involve children in your activities. This organizing day commemorates June 16, 1976, South African police massacred over 700 innocent protesters, mostly school children, in the black township of Soweto. Repression has continued, and the U.S. still provides significant financial and diplomatic support for apartheid. On February 24, 1988, there was a crackdown on 17 anti-apartheid organizations and continued war in the region. Contact organizations are the Washington Office on Africa (WOA), Bread for the World, and the United Church of Christ (UCC).
