The program says during the late 1920's Walter Sisulu worked as a laborer in a dairy and then in the mines, where he spoke out vehemently against the injustices. The program says this marked the beginnings of his political activism. The program says in 1940 he joined the African National Congress (ANC) and met Oliver Tambo and Nelson Mandela, forging a friendship lasting over fifty years. The program says together they found the ANC Youth League where he met Albertina. The program says in 1949 Walter Sisulu was elected as the Secretary-General of the National Executive Committee of the ANC. The program says he has been arrested, banned and was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 on Robben Island. The program says Albertina Sisulu was born October 21, 1918 in Tsomo, Transkei. The program says she was trained as a general nurse at General Hospital in Johannesburg and obtained her midwifery Certificate at Bridgeman Maternity Hospital in 1954. The program says her interest in politics began as she grew increasingly disturbed by the health conditions of women and children in Soweto. The program says she like her husband has been detained, placed under house arrest and in solitary confinement numerous times. The program says Albertina opened her home to hide and shelter South African students during the 1976 Soweto Uprising where hundreds of children was harassed and murdered. The program says Albertina Sisulu was elected into the National Executive Committee of the ANC in July, 1991, is presently a Member of Parliament in the ANC led government of National Unity.
