The mailing says the Unlock Apartheid's Jails campaign has begun to change this situation, but we urgently need your help in the next step in the campaign. The mailing says in October we organized the dumping of 30,000 keys at the South African Consulate in New York City symbolizing the demand to unlock apartheid's jails and free all political prisoners and detainees. The mailing says on Tuesday December 15 we will be escalating our pressure on the apartheid regime by dumping even more keys at the South African Embassy in Washington DC; postcards calling for the release of detained children, which have been collected by the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, will also be deposited at that time; the event is scheduled for 12:00 to 2:00pm to enable people to come during their lunch hour. The mailing says we urge you to support the event by: 1) Reproducing and distributing the enclosed flyer among your organization members and contacts. 2) Attending the event and if possible bringing a delegation from your organization or workplace; we encourage you to collect keys (many groups have used fishbowls) and bring them to the protest to be deposited at the embassy; let us know how many people will attend and the approximate number of keys as soon as possible. 3) During the 12:00-2:00pm time period there will be a legal rally and press conference at the gathering point north of the embassy at 31 Str and Massachusetts Ave; there will also be a civil disobedience aspect to the event for those interested; if you would be willing to be arrested as part of the protest please contact us immediately. The mailing says the South African regime is deeply concerned about this campaign and the spotlight it has placed on its repression; we hope you will join us on December 15 to help free the thousands still imprisoned in apartheid's jails. The mailing includes a flier/leaflet advertising a Press Conference and Rally sponsored by the Southern Africa Project, Lawyers' Committee and co-sponsored by the American Committee on Africa and the National Bar Association.
