The mailing says we received a call from the staff of the House of Representatives Africa Sub-Committee; they were working on a new bill to impose effective economic sanctions against South Africa; they needed the support of a particular member of the Sub-Committee; could ACOA help? The mailing says we immediately began contacting legislators and community leaders in this Congressman's district; within a few days we got word that he could be counted on to back the sanctions bill all the way. The mailing says this is a small but important step towards ending U.S. economic support for apartheid; ACOA was effective because of the national network of concerned individuals we have built through years of work on divestment and sanctions and on behalf of political prisoners in South Africa. The mailing says there has never been a time when it was more important to keep taking even small steps to stop U.S. corporations from subsidizing the brutality of apartheid by investing in South Africa. The mailing says in the last month alone: * South African secret agents murdered Dulcie September, the ANC's Chief Representative in France; she was shot five times with a .22 caliber automatic as she arrived at her Paris office. * South African President P. W. Botha stepped in to halt the trial of soldiers who murdered a SWAPO leader in Namibia; meanwhile, the regime hung five black anti-apartheid activists. * The South African government intensified its relentless drive to close down all independent sources of information; as I write this letter a Catholic newspaper, The New Nation, has just been suppressed. The mailing says no wonder Rev. Frank Chikane, the General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches has issued a desperate appeal to the U.S. government "to apply mandatory economic sanctions against the apartheid regime to force the regime to go to the negotiating table to avoid the loss of more lives in this country." The mailing says your generous contributions made an immense difference in the successful drive to pass the 1986 Anti-Apartheid Act which banned new U.S. investment in South Africa; now we need to finish the job and pass the bill to end all economic support for apartheid. The mailing says your donation will go a long way to support the courageous people m South Africa who are facing death every day because of their determination to live in freedom. The mailing discusses the South African Council of Churches (SACC).
