The mailing says Walter Sisulu, newly elected Deputy President of the African National Congress, will be our honored guest. The mailing says New York Mayor David N. Dinkins is the Honorary Chairman of the celebration which will be held on Monday September 30 from 4-8pm at Hunter College; Mr. Sisulu will inaugurate a new Africa Fund lecture series "Challenges for Africa." His remarks will be followed by a special reception in his honor. The mailing says Walter Sisulu has been Nelson Mandela's closest political associate for over thirty years; before they were both imprisoned on Robben Island, he was the ANC's General Secretary, known as the "Lion of the ANC" for his courage and determination; since his release from prison Sisulu has been centrally engaged in re-organizing the ANC inside the country; following his New York visit, The Africa Fund is arranging for Mr. Sisulu to travel to Washington and other cities to meet with public officials and community leaders. The mailing says as a long-time and steadfast supporter of our work, you know that The Africa Fund has stood close to the heart of the struggle for freedom and justice in southern Africa for the past quarter century; it has worked closely with virtually every independence leader from Julius Nyerere of Tanzania and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe to Nelson Mandela; it crusaded to free political prisoners, spearheaded the drive to impose sanctions on apartheid, and mobilized the conscience of America on behalf of the oppressed people of southern Africa; this is a record to celebrate, even as we turn to face the new tasks posed by a changing Africa in a changing world. The mailing says I hope you will support this important event as a Benefactor ($2,500), Patron ($1,000) or Sponsor ($500); you will, of course, be invited to the lecture and reception, and you will be listed in the special 25th anniversary program which will be distributed that evening. The mailing says all funds generated from this event will go first towards the cost of Walter Sisulu's trip to the U.S. and then to support The Africa Fund's ongoing work.
