The mailing says everywhere I went people talked to me about the key role America is playing in supporting South Africa; South Africa's intransigence and aggression are laid directly at the U.S. door; everyone from the head of the Organization of African Unity's Liberation Committee, to the personal assistant to President Nyerere of Tanzania, to cabinet ministers in Zimbabwe and Mozambique, stressed that the American people must be told what is really happening in southern Africa. The mailing says I have always believed that nothing we do at The Africa Fund is more important than that; while I was in Africa we published "Human Rights Violations in Apartheid South Africa" by our Research Director Gail Hovey; it is a powerful piece, documenting the torture, imprisonment, and even death, being meted out to people who dare to raise their voices for a free South Africa; already major churches have ordered 40% of the press run; I am sending you a copy with this letter and look forward to your response. The mailing says our publications are only part of our information and education program; our Projects Director, Dumisani Kumalo maintained a busy schedule of speaking and interviews even while taking some time off to complete his forthcoming autobiography; recently in San Antonio he addressed the convention of the million member Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), which voted to withdraw the church's funds from corporations operating in South Africa; in August he appeared on WOR-TV's "Straight Talk" program in New York to debate the issue of corporate investment in South Africa. The mailing says we have come through the always difficult summer months when contributions drop off sharply; this fall we need to move ahead with new publications, a national student conference, speaking tours for black South African and Namibian student leaders, and providing badly needed assistance for refugees. The mailing says while I was in Africa I promised the people I met, and especially the South African refugees that we would go on informing the American people about South Africa's reign of terror; I hope that you will contribute as generously as you can.
