Mailing to the ACOA Student Network about the 1986 National Weeks of Anti-Apartheid Action. Since 1979, Spring Weeks of Action have increased the overall impact of the national movement, while providing local flexibility. Last year's Weeks of Action helped spur campus militancy and fueled the public fund divestment campaigns. These resources are enclosed: 1) Flyer on Weeks of action, with anti-apartheid contacts, literature list, and film guide. 2) Flyer for the April 4 National Divestment Protest Day commemorating Martin Luther King, focused on civil disobedience actions at key institutions. 3) Flyer for March 21 Sharpeville Anniversary that calls for action directed at U.S. government sites focused against U.S. aid to UNITA, South Africa's contra force in Angola. 4) Speech by Martin Luther King, Jr. calling for economic sanctions against South Africa. 5) Proposal from Dartmouth College that calls for April 4th protests to demand total divestment and affirmative action in admissions, linking anti-apartheid work and campus struggles against institutional racism. ACOA will produce a press release summarizing actions planned for March 21-April 6, so please share your plans. The enclosed Student Anti-Apartheid Newsletter contains a critique of the latest Sullivan Code report and summary of recent protests and divestment victories. The mailing also includes a leaflet "CELEBRATE THE SPIRIT OF RESISTANCE OF THE NAMIBIAN PEOPLE!" urging solidarity actions to raise funds for Namibia refugees. The mailing mentions ANC (African National Congress), SWAPO (South West Africa People's Organization), shanties, Solomon Mahlangu, the 1960 Sharpeville Massacre, Runs for Freedom, political prisoners, National Student Conference on South Africa and Namibia, campus-community alliances, Keene College, the University of Vermont, Columbia, Rutgers, Berkeley, blockades, Black History Month, and divestment legislation.
