Fundraising mailing for ACOA from Jennifer Davis in which she discusses her recent trip to Mozambique to attend the funeral of President Samora Machel. South Africa has funded, trained and directed its own "contras" in Mozambique. They destroy schools, ambulances and hospitals. They are waging a campaign of terror against villagers. The Mozambican people have fought too long and hard for their freedom to give up now. Nor will they let the murder unleashed by the apartheid regime stop them from supporting their brothers and sisters in South Africa. Dave says when she visited President Machel's widow, Graca Machel, Machel told her, "We can work and build for 10 or 20 years and still have nothing so long as apartheid exists." Everywhere she went in Mozambique, Davis says people told her the U.S. and its allies must impose strong and effective sanctions against South Africa, because sanctions are vital to ending apartheid's power. Davis says years of work for divestment and sanctions yielded significant victories in 1986, and more can be won in the future. Congress passed the first anti-apartheid bill in history over President Reagan's veto. Eastman Kodak just became the first major American corporation to totally sever its ties with South Africa. California became the 19th state to begin withdrawing funds from corporations which invest in apartheid. Today, 19 states, 13 counties and 70 cities have acted to divest over $18.5 billion.
