Memorandum to Alan Cooper, Bill Minter and Nzongola Ntalaja confirming what they agreed to do to plan for an ACAS meeting on December 6. There will be a morning plenary (stock taking) and lunch, then four workshops meeting simultaneously, each about a specific area of prospective political action. The list of areas and coordinators follows: (a) Southern Africa in Washington, D.C. (executive and legislative branch) Minter; (b) Southern Africa in rest of U.S. (any community-level activity such as divestment) - Cooper; (c) political action vis-a-vis the rest of Africa - Nzongola; (d) U.S. government and Africa scholars - Wiley. Your duties are the following regarding your assigned topic: (1) By Sept. 30, draft a statement (200-500 words) of proposed action by ACAS in 1984-1985 and send this draft to both Wallerstein and Wiley; this draft statement will be distributed via newsletter to ACAS members before the meeting. (2) Assemble panel of 2-3 people to discuss draft statement on Dec. 6; these people are not to give mini-papers, but to discuss the draft program. (3) Preside over redrafting of statement by the workshop on Dec. 6. (4) Present the revised draft to the concluding plenary.
