The mailing asks for support for Congressman Wolpe because of his record of leadership in African affairs in the House of Representatives. Wolpe is also a recognized scholar of Africa, having published "Nigeria: Modernization and the Politics of Communalism" (MSU Press) and "Port Harcourt: Ibo Politics in Microcosm." Wolpe chairs the Subcommittee on Africa of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and he has sought to increase drought relief and U.S. response to Africa's food crisis, to expose the Administration's support of the Republic of South Africa, and to reduce military aid to Morocco and Zaire. He consistently calls attention to African needs in their own right and not just as a way to "oppose Soviet expansion." The powerful and conservative NCPAC committee has targeted Wolpe - among only 15 others of the House - to be defeated. Last month, the National Rifle Association president and Wolpe's opponent made McCarthyist charges that Wolpe is a "Communist sympathizer." In a year in which the first bills have been introduced in Congress with a serious chance of directly imposing economic sanctions on South Africa, keeping Wolpe in Congress and at the helm of the Africa Subcommittee is of highest priority.
