This Statement of the Assembly of the Committee of Return Volunteers (CRV) calls for attention on Southern Africa because it is an area where imperialism and racism are at their worst. Cecil John Rhodes has been seen by the political establishment as a trail-blazing exponent of Social Darwinism of the late 19th century. Rhodes decided to construct his own model of an imperialist colony, which became Rhodesia, with the help of the British South Africa Company (BSAC). In April, 1966, guerrilla warfare broke out there. Two groups are now involved in this liberation struggle - the Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) and the People's Caretaker Council-Zimbabwe African People's Union (PCC-ZAPU). Portugal is today both the poorest and most backward country of Europe and the largest colonial empire in the world. Following the massacres of Luanda in 1961, guerrilla war broke out in Angola. Three groups have been involved in the fighting - the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), the People's Union of Angola (UPA), and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA). American planes and arms were being used by Portugal against the people of Angola in 1963-66. In 1964, the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) launched an armed struggle in Mozambique; FRELIMO leader Eduardo Mondlane was assassinated in February of this year. In West Africa, Portugal is about to lose to the most effective liberation movement of Africa, Cabral's PAIGC. Eight liberation movements are active on the Southern Africa front, and they have representatives in New York and in the U.S. These representatives can speak to groups and help raise funds and material aid for the movement, including clothing for refugees, medicines, educational materials, and watches. The statement mentions Spencerian Socialism, Anglo-Boar War, Davis M'gabe, Dzimbabwe, NATO, the arms market, and armed struggle.
