Mailing reports that the Committee of Returned Volunteers (CRV) National Board, meeting in Milwaukee, appointed an interim national Southern Africa committee and approved a staff person to coordinate and organize the CRV Southern Africa project. Representatives from chapters currently involved or interested in the Southern Africa Project formulated guidelines for action. The CRV Project will have an anti-imperialist thrust, concentrating on U.S. corporate involvement and strategy in Southern Africa. Focusing in the U.S. on these companies will be acting in solidarity with the Liberation Movements, which also are fighting these same corporations. Gulf Oil was selected as the national corporate focus because of its significant role in Angola (the oil in Cabinda will bring Portugal the equivalent of nearly half its military budget for Angola) and the importance of the struggles in the Portuguese colonies for all of Southern Africa. The New York Africa Committee prepared a list of possible actions attacking Gulf that provides ideas for other chapters. The National Southern Africa Committee is planning an action at the Gulf Stockholders Meeting in April. Local chapters should look into corporations which have offices in their area and are involved in Southern Africa. Madison and Milwaukee are planning actions around Allis-Chalmers, a Wisconsin-based firm that is building nuclear reactors for South Africa. CRV can also try to insert Southern Africa into other actions, such as blocking of recruiters on campuses for defense contracts or discriminatory employment practices. The next newsletter will be on Southern Africa. Sam Barnes will visit CRV chapters in the East and Mid-west with other national officers to discuss Southern Africa and other CRV projects.
